need another car!!

on Tue May 09, 2017 1:04 pm
circumstances have changed....i need a daily runner and do NOT want to part company with the 370.....so, i need something uber economical for a 110 mile commute everyday, it needs to offset the huge cost of owning the 370 (500 tax, 650 insurance, depreciation, fuel!) and be as cheap as poss. i started looking at 0.8l diesel smart cars today, I know huge has one of these and i dont know how i would feel....but this is how cheap i need this to be

up to about £4k......go!

Anything like a Focus diesel would fit the bill wouldn't it?

Sod 110 miles a day in a Smartcar ..

For me - Corsa, Fiesta or Yaris diesel ... the diesel versions of these are in low demand, so prices are cheap, and they'll be light on fuel, tyres, etc.

Small and cheap. Get a £1-2k-ish Citroen C3 or C2 diesel. Not loads around...but desirable and fetch more than the petrols. You can find them for under £1k but these will likely already have high miles.
Probs not the best for comfort though...but will do 60+mpg if you dont go above 70mph. And more if you go slower. £30 a year tax, some less. Try to get as new as poss.
On the cost/mpg balance...they are probably around the cheapest cars there are.
You can get a newer/better car for more money....but you asked for 'cheap as poss'.
Peugeot 206 are similarly cheap...but have a somewhat dodgy driving position. Rear axles can go....get as new and as low mileage as possible.
I'd also recommend a MK1 Toyota Yaris 1.4 D4D. Not exciting but lovely little diesel engine, reliable, tough cars. 60-70mpg easy. They fetch more like-for-like compared to the PSAs though.

If you don't mind high miles you'd probably find a cheap 5 series diesel in budget

There's hundreds of options here. If you're going diesel then you need to find out which are the options which are least likely to let you down with an expensive failure of some ki d! I'd go older diesel - my old Fabia VRS was a great mile muncher, good fun and has the reliable old 1.9 vw diesel for example.

Astra 1.3 or 1.7 CDTI would be a half-decent mile-muncher. Smile

Diesel Smart - 100 miles a day. Some do it. Not sure comfort would be up to it.

However I've had 95 mpg on the motorway.......

They are surprisingly fun and zero tax for a 59 plate onwards.

Wife has had the 2007 C4 SX 1.6hdi for about 5 years now and only this year it failed MoT (mostly because I couldn't service it as normal) on daft things, bearing, brake pads, tyres and CV boot's.

It has been EPIC up to now. 70mpg, best since running ONLY on BP Ultimate. and 30 quid per year tax.

It's STILL very up to date with the funky layout and steering wheel wot turns but centre wot doesn't Very Happy

It holds my disco shit and the flappy paddles, although not the quickest gear change, are a hoot. I mean, manual, foot down, rev counter flashes red, lift off & change up, foot down...No clutch involved.

Regular oil changes and get rid of the strainer in the high pressure oil feed to the turbo.

They are piss easy to work on, cheap as for genuine parts and look the part.

No brainer. Forget all the ricer pish, German pish and any other pish. Try the frogs legs, you know you want to Wink

Or this.
Cat C....but it's cheap, newish and low.miles. I've driven a couple of these and they are decently refined, fun and spacious for little cars. I like the colour of this one too.

I just found a great car on Auto Trader.

The problem with a Smart is that you then have two two seater impractical cars - do you ever need a bit more space?

I've not driven a Smart BUT I did once do a 200 mile round trip in an Aygo... it really wasn't fun, felt shattered at the end of it

The good thing about a smart is - it's easy to park.
