If you were any more risk adverse, you'd never get out of bed!! Cars are designed to be driven; I do about 12k miles a year. I go for large engined cars because they are more "lazy" - you wouldn't drive the Jag on max revs for very long. Unless you were on a track maybe. With this in mind I expect to have it another 4 years; might be worth £2k then. I paid less than £10k - fairly cheap motoring.

The Avantime threw up some issues in the time I had it. Renault quoted about £4500 for a new gearbox. I paid £850 for a brand new one and a couple of hundred to have it fitted - the internet is a wonderful thing. In the last week or so I've had a couple of electrical "gremlins" on the XF - interior light coming on and off, the parking sensors are doing odd things and also the tyre pressure monitoring system. All are well documented issues. But my gut feeling is the battery is on its way out. Electrical systems are very sensitive.

I budget £1000 a year for servicing and sorting issues. I like to keep a fund available for bigger jobs. So, when you next buy a car take your budget and ring fence say £3000. Spend the remainder on a new one - just higher mileage, FSH and good condition. Personally I'd prefer to buy a car with an average of 15k miles a year then 5k.

Just buy your mate's Porsche - you still want to. We might let you in the 300+ club then!!!!

When I sold the E320 it had 197k and the emissions were astoundingly low.

Guy called me last night, a year down the line she's still running beautifully, but had burst a hydraulic pipe. Easy fix though.

Miles are nothing LK if the car is well maintained Cool

Actually it sounds a bit like my car when I was doing a ton on the German autobahn. I was inside the car though. Razz

Reminded me of the Typhoon that did a low fly over our village last week for the Funeral of a Vice Air Marshall.

Hugh - did you ever get the K+N air filter?

No - cured the regular idle by using better quality fuel. VPower.

If you're ever in my area (your brother is Clapham, right?) I'd be very interested to have a go in the Jaaaag ....

It's not my sort of car, but it has got me thinking about V8 M3's ...

We've got an away day at work soon, and the guys are going to Brands Hatch to have a go in some M4's ... can't wait ....

More nice noise - less super charger whine, but this is the noise mine makes when pulling away. Can be louder though.....
