Ok - Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 SRi

A tale of 2 halves ....

Well, as far as cars go, it's pretty awful.

SRI?? ... in what way is this an SRI ?? The engine sure isn't anything special. In fact, i'm struggling to see how a 1.4 Corsa can be so lacking in grunt. I know that car engines are tuned more for torque these days, to suit the masses, but it hasn't even got a nice rev'y top end.
The car must be very heavy, because on a downhill stretch it was quite nippy, but still not exciting.

Its not an SRI in terms of handling either. OK compared to Corsa's of old, its fairly firm in to ride in, and it corners ok, but the steering feel is terrible, and coming out of bends, it feels very in-natural.
Brakes are ok I guess.
The gear shift is too light.
The seats are bordering on SRI ... nicely bolstered, but although the seats go nice and low, it makes them sit at an aukward angle, and the steering wheel doesn't come down far enough to match the low driving positon.

So, interior wise it's actually quite spacious, and doesn't feel like you are driving a super-mini. Spec wise its pretty decent, quite high tech stereo system, partial digital dash, auto lights, etc.
However - that bloody red line .... it must be the SRI red line ... but as you are driving its all you see - that would have to go !!!

Its typical VX interior quality. Feels like a posh wheelie bin .... lots of hard plastic. Although actually it doesn't bother me - it might be a harsher interior compared to most of the competition, but I reckon it'd wear very well.

So, its slow, handles poorly, the driving position is terrible, and the dash has an annoying red line that I want to rip out .... so why do I love it !!!!

I popped out to B&Q tonight, and took it just for the hell of it .... its just because you can take it by the scruff of the neck and drive the wheels off it.

As a car ... it freaking terrible compared to my 1 series, or of course the 911 .... but ask me to take on of the above in to London tonight, and I'd take the Corsa ... its so bad, its good, and you can throw it around, park it where you want, and not give a toss ...

Variety is the spice of life ....

Oh, just to add .... the air con is terrible .... barely cools the car down ....

Still like the car though ....

Weirdly, give we are all massive petrol heads .... I love cheap and cheerful cars that encourage you to get out and use them ...

I remember years ago getting a Ford Ka hire car, and deciding it was a good excuse to drive out for a meal .... in that instance, its a better car than a Ferrari you daren't take anywhere

Glad to see it hasn't improved since I had had lots of Corsa SRI hire cars

Assume they had so many because VX couldn't sell them to anyone else

Good point about the car you can leave anywhere. A couple of times I've left the Agila in street parking for a week or two. Didn't have to care if it was still there when I got back. Razz

Got this car with 4x4 so I could go places in bad weather. Once drove the car out of the garage to go to work, the street covered in snow and snowing hard, turned around and drove right back again.. decided to work from home instead... so much for the 4 wheel drive.

I've driven a ton and my mum had one - nice to be in but shit to drive. Felt like I was sitting too high up and on the seat rather than in it.

Which flavour of 1.4 is it? They now come as either 75 or 90PS ever since they scrapped the 1.2.

Scrapping a Corsa ... that sounds good !!!

I guess its the slow one - but this is the SRI - so maybe its the hot (tepid) one !!!

Sadly 'SRI' is nothing other than a trim level now, meaning you get a few sporting touches but nothing else. Sad Gone are the days of the likes of the Cavalier SRI with the "red top" engine!! In fact, the old Insignia 'SRI' was effectively the 'LS' of the range - although with the new Insignia that's now the 'Design' model.

The 1.0 turbo engine is pretty good and would give an SRI more of a sporting edge. However, if you want to do things properly, it has to be the VXR - which are actually pretty damn good!! Smile

Vauxhall do have some carp names for their cars, don't they ...

Live.
Design.
Freeze.
Desire.
Exclusiv.
Badger.

Almost as bad as some of the Renault special edition ... iMusic and carp ....

Long live the Victor and Velox, lol.

On the subject of Vauxhalls, I've always wanted one of these, but they're as rare as hen's teeth, especially unmodified, then this appeared just down the road from where my other half lives...

Can't really justify spending £10k on one though!!

I've never owned a Vauxhall.

The closest i came was back in probs...2002ish? I worked for a VW dealer and they had a brill deal for staff on 1.2 SXi Corsa..including (at the time) free insurance...i was sorely, sorely tempted.
But Mr Sensible Head took over and i remained with cheapy bangers.

As far as cheapy bangers go, Vectras are great value for money these days - even last of the line 2008 models can be had for under a couple of grand. Great cars for the family. Smile
