BMW - Ms; what's it all about?

on Thu Aug 31, 2017 8:22 am
Over the last few days I have been driving a fair bit on the M5 (motorway, not car!). I have noticed an increase in BMWs carrying the M badge. Now many of these are of the diesel variety, and very few have the flared nostril look of a performance M. Many don't like the fact that my "Diesel" Jaguar goes past them....

A simple question; is this the same as the Audi S Line badge? Are they available on all engine specs etc?

(Ok that was 2 questions!)

M for Mogs too.

The thing is there is a now a M-Sport the best trim package for a normal BMW. Then the real M.

Someone will say it more accurately that I can.

M and S line are very similar, yes.

Just like S Line becomes the S'3/4 etc

The M (sports) become the M135i, M140i, etc .... but ultimately the M2 M3 etc.

Just like S line cars - M sport cars can be diesel ego boxes, or actually come in quite high performance options (although Audi cars less so), and some of it I visual - spoilers, wheels, even unique colours (Estoril blue) etc .... but just like S line, some of it is performance based .... mostly around lowered and stiffened suspension.

Thanks for clearing that up LK.

Jaguar have rather confused matters too. For the last 10 years of so the R version was a Supercharged V8 specced car - not looking that much different to the rest of the ranges to be honest, but all were fairly swift cars.

Then a couple of years ago they dropped the R, and with the XF dropped the 5L V8 S/C from the Uk market!

This was apparently as other manufacturers were using it (the R!) for their top cars - Volvo, VW etc etc. Next Jaguar brought the R back as the R-Sport - on a bl00dy 2L diesel!! Why?!!?! All rather illogical on the part of Jag.......

Anyway car off for a service this afternoon......

Ahhhh - with a little research, I now understand what Jaguar are up to. The R-Sport spec seems to be the same as M and S Line and comes in all current engine variants. So that other Company car buyers can understand it.

p.s, as far as i can tell on mine, its the front and rear bumpers/splitters, msport alloys with fatter rear rubbers, sports seats with leccy side lumbar, very fat embossed steering wheel.

perosnally, if i could have found one, i'd have gone for the mSport+ model as it has the LED adaptive lamps, 19" alloys, misted windows and the calipers are blue (which might seem trivial, but look awesome)

A chap at the cricket club has an XF R-Sport. He said, "200bhp diesel is fab isn't is, Hugh?"

"Don't know," I said, "but 510 bhp petrol is very nice!!"

I had to explain that an XFR is rather different to an XF R-Sport - arse port.

Lol

Although he's probably of the 'Well, mine does 50mpg and 600 miles per tank' brigade.

Take him for a spin (literally) in yours, and scare the stumps out of him - hehehe
