Rough Diamond

on Tue Sep 26, 2017 12:46 pm
So, the A3 has an issue .... not one that overly bothers me - but it'll need work at some point.

I remember test driving the car, and the air con was weak / not working.

I took heart in the fact that the ECON light wasn't on - which I know is normally the warning sign - and the vendor put it down to needing a re-gas. I let it slide, as at the right price, I'd take my chances.

Anyway - regassed today - pressure test all good - compressor is going round - but ECON light comes on, and no cold air.

Apparently there was no gas or oil in the system, so I have been advised to run it for a week and see what happens - but I think that it taking the optimistic side.

So - what's wrong ??

I'll give it a while, and maybe get it checked at some point ..

Job one is to get the BM sold ... I can then part-ex the Audi if needs be at a later date, and it'll still have been cheap motoring.

But - I'd love to find a cheap fix for the air con if poss, and give me the chance to sell it on privately.

Anyone ?

Exactly.

Front and rear my dear man.

Just need to get the BMW sold, and then I'll trade the A3 in next year, for something with working air con Very Happy

I miss the old days without air conditioning. Keeping a pair of sandals in the car, stripping off my shirt before driving home. It was like being the wild man.

The Air Con was patchy in the Civic. I bought a can of leak finder stuff on ebay, £25 ish and asked work to do a regas and put this stuff in at the same time. Didn't hold out much hope.....but it worked!

Mondeo kept losing gas. Needed a new compressor. Had it done when we had a new radiator put on.

Consider the £25 spray in stuff dude! It's cheap enough to try (with a regas) to not be too upsetting if it doesn't work.
Happily, The C3 Crickasso has very functional air con - a rarity for me! Most of my air con quipped cars have simply refused to work or have been patchy.

I fear its more serious than that, because when I gassed it first time, I'm not sure it was working properly even for a short time.

Weird one, because for a while it tripped in the econ mode, and now its not doing that - its just not working.

Not too bothered by it at the moment - still need to get rid of the BMW.

Just find a decent aircon specialist. They'll diagnose the problem and tell you much it is to fix. Even if it does need parts you can always get bits from a breaker.

Thats what i’ll do - thanks.

Wasted £40 already by just having it filled with gas, that’s probably all leaked out again.

Worth getting specialists to look at stuff like this.

Yes. My local specialist does a pressure test first, to see if it holds, then puts a dye in so if it leaks they can see where from.

Yeah, it passed the pressure test - but aparently the pressure test is a pretty sheet test ... it works on vacuum - now if the seals have gone or if there is a rip or tear in a pipe,, a vacuum test can hide that by sucking them back in - so it passed in theory.

Yes. It only picks up certain leaks. Did they put a dye in?

Nah, quite reasonable to be honest. About £150 ish I think, maybe £180. I'll see if I can dig the receipt out in next day or two. Bearing in mind they had to take it out to replace the rad anyway, so there was no labour charge as such.
