I'm not sure I could stomach the fuel economy. I want something with a bit of poke but I do need yo keep half an eye on running costs.

Oh and that car has the dreaded r word. Had my gill of rust and don't really want to buy a car that needs bodywork.

I'm not sure. The chap I sold it to bought an XJ Supersport back in the summer; this chap hasn't had it that long at all...

Honestly, don't be put off by the VW 2.0Ts - though obviously in most guises they won't be as good value as a Saab or Vauxhall.

How about an Octavia VRS? Had one pull away in front of me the other day - rapid!! I'm guessing it was a petrol rather than a diesel. Nice in the deep blue colour..

Octavia VRS holds it's value quite well and finding one with sensible miles in budget will be a challenge. I aint spending more than £4k.

Most will recall I detest VAG because (and I was right way way back) they are liars & cheats and got caught out, but STILL pretend they are value for money!

No they are NOT! They are middling at best and only half as good as their rival Opel or Vauxhall. That is my humble and I'm sticking to it.

Pete, you should go for an Insignia Estate, they are loaded and fabulous value for money. Mate has one and it does mental mpg (it is diesel mind you) has all the toys and looks the tits in sporty red.

600 miles per litre? Imagine you want to drive to, say, Kaunas. 1800 miles give or take (from me) that's 3 litres of oil, more than two thirds gone and if you bank round a corner at speed, low oil, starve the big ends and you get rewarded with a death rattle! Stuff that.

Even my 17 year old Range Rover with it's V8 uses no oil whatsoever and they are about as unreliable as you can find apparently Rolling Eyes

VolksWankers, bleurrggghhhhh affraid

A petrol Passat? Good luck with that one! Maybe a Jetta if you're lucky.

That's the problem - petrol engined family cars fell out of favour very quickly around 10-15 years ago, and there aren't that many about on the used market, and now with diesel proving to be the evil child killing fuel of Satan, presumably those petrol examples have increased demand too.

There are a few Petrol Passats out there with the 2.0 T engine. The Jetta only got the FSI.
