Cheap OBD reader

on Thu Dec 14, 2017 10:36 am
Thinking of getting one.

Only want to spend £10 or so, ideally on one that links to my phone, and uses an app.

Anyone got any experience with these - or any advice.

On a side note, can they measure the BHP of a car ?? Be interested to see what the Audi is actually pumping out ...

yeah i've got a BT one that i can use with Torque, its alright, depends on what your canbus feeds - the error codes are quite basic and limited too

depends on the car and what the ECU reads......so it will be things like rpm, speed, oil temp etc....then the more advanced stuff will be fuel level, doors open/closed, lights on/off, mpg, etc etc....basically whatever sensors the car has thats readable by the OBD2 port

https://tinyurl.com/ya8uerb3 this device from Fleabay

bluetooths in to your phone

then you use the app TORQUE on android or Crapple

and see the delights in real time of your ECU, which should look like this:

I have an ELM reader and use it with Torque. About £7 for both.

Not sure how accurate the BHP reading will be. Acceleration times not too bad.

Can the cheap ones read error codes for any car?

I'd have thought you need to visit a rolling road to get your bhp figure!

they read some codes, its no alternative to a full code reader thats for sure.

as for the BHP.....my car's iDrive has a built in 'sports dial' where it gives you real time torque and HP figures, not sure how accurate it is, so i guess its car specific, but it must be possible

It suspect it won't be measuring it, it will be based on a standard power/torque curve for that car. I bet it simply looks at throttle position, and rpm and looks it up.

yeah you are probably right.....its not a feature i have activated to be honest, its cool to show a friend when you are accelerating, but like you said, probably has zero accuracy.
