He did? I think you're confusing best with worst!

I can't see much future for Vauxhall. They don't make anything interesting, I don't think people are that excited by the brand and sales are going down. I don't know why PSA bought them, if not to take them out and gain market share!

Clarkson said the Vectra was the worst car in the world!

In fact he either got banned or refused to do any more reviews of Vauxhalls for a while after the original Vectra one he did, where he spent pretty much the whole review in silence.

I think PSA have looked at the market and overall have maybe though this is the most 'potential capacity' they can source at a relatively low price. I think ultimately they will see which plants are most productive etc and have a medium-long term plan to like...move things around and streamline stuff. I think if/when the whole market picks up they'll have a good amount of capacity to make inroads.

They just need to get things right. I do have time for PSA as they do make (IMO) quite decent car with a bit more style and interest than some other brands. Im not sure what they're going to do with Opel/VX.
I can imagine that they'll possibly just make it all Opel everywhere and say goodbye to Vauxhall as a brand though. Which some may find sad.

Personally, I think Peugeot should be continuing with new models, and all future Vauxhalls should actually be old Peugeots, when they were genuinely decent cars! Wink They can bring back the 406 and 605 for a start, lol.

Yes, Peugeots high times were in the 90's really werent they, 106, 306, 405, 406, all great at the time.

I used to find them really desirable! (i was still a teenager kinda thing) but distinctly remember i had all the Peugeot brochures, the 306 and 406 were genuinely desirable cars!

I actually think...yes..i did...i had a Peugeot 406 poster on my wall when they first came out!

And there's nothing sad about that is there?!!!

406 coupe perhaps... Saloon maybe not, unless you were an aspiring cabbie!

The 405s and 406s were very robust though. We had a few in the family that did big miles and were creaky and flimsy but kept on going. I learned to drive in my mum's 205, which was a great car and I enjoyed my early motoring freedom in that car. The I had a 306, which was great in some ways and not in others (but looked great!). They definitely lost their way in recent years. I think the latest 308 looks pretty good (silly interior though).

When the 406 saloon came out i thought it was like....well...very pretty indeed! (the coupe was nicer of course but that was a bit later)

Just like the E39 5 series in 95/96ish....stunning when it first came out!

i had the V6 406 coupé.....with red leather, i've got a pic somewwhere.....i loved that car, it looked absolutely amazing........and although by todays standards, the 3.0v6 was pretty gutless (201hp) it was a hoot to drive - it was also my first car with built in sat nav (we are talking 2001 here!)

Very pretty cars those 406 coupes.

I remember you having yours Spot.

Did you find any similarities between that and the RC-Z? Like...in terms of feel or even like...components?

Like..i know they were totally different cars but were there any bits that reminded you of the 406? (i'll bet there are some parts shared even from back then)

yeah, the switchgear was all the same.......still !, i seem to remember in my review of the Arsey Z that i commented on the prehistoric switchgear, its a shame as the Arsey Z was a beautiful looking thing, ruined by crap switchgear

Always loved the 406 Coupe. The saloon was handsome but to create a coupe like that from an everyday family car/repmobile was really something.

As it happens, me and the other half went to Keighley Balti House on Saturday night that LK mentioned earlier in the thread - really good stuff!! To keep it car-related, the Veccy got us there without issue, lol.

i'm gonna have to agree with Tom.......Vauxhalls are as dull as the Keighley balti houses dishwater, the only one i've driven which i kinda liked, was the Ampera......but only because of what it was....I recall driving it and looking at the ridiculous steering wheel design and thinking 'can i live with this'................then i bought the i3 (15k more mind!!)

Dull's fine as long as lack of excitement is compensated by being reliable. Smile

I acquired an Astra for my stepdad via work - a part ex. Think i might have mentioned it on here already. Anyway it's a 59 plate 1.6 SXi 5dr for a grand, 69k miles. Good car. It drives nicely enough, i often think GM make nice engines - there's a nice smooth and punchy feel to this 1.6, it goes quite well.

The older 1.4/1.6 are quite nippy - the newer ones are shite without a turbo. Completely gutless. I'm guessing the performance has been strangled for emissions reasons.

Totally agree FF!

I feel like this 05-10 version is still ok - but i did drive a 2014 reg Astra 1.6 (or was it a 2012?) anyway the next model, it was the standard 110bhp ish 1.6 model - and it was really, really poor. I think i mentioned it on here at the time - totally fluffy, unresponsive utterly gutless engine! I also put a post on PH about it actually as there was one going.

I gather it's pretty much the same engine as the previous one so it's got to be down to throttle mapping and efficiency stuff! Got to be!

Like! When my dad has his Vectra (2007) it was the 140ps 1.8 VVTi engine and i thought the engine itself was very nice! Smooth, responsive etc, It wasn't slow and it was just generally a nice engine to use - BUT! The Insignia gets an absolute loooooaaaad of stick about the 1.8 being utterly useless?!! Gotta be mapping meaning less responsiveness! (longer gearing can blunt things too of course)
