The MX5 diaries ... UPDATED !!!

on Wed Feb 28, 2018 9:40 am
So, I thought I'd open a new thread following the progress of my search for a second (third) car ..... at the moment I am going to call it the MX5 diaries, but lets see how it all pans out.

So, I have so far seen 2 MX5's.

The over-riding sense at the moment is that I am going to keep searching for the right car, but that the right car, is an MX5.

I have seen 2 so far, and although neither were right, the car itself is a blast.

Anyone that says they are a girls car, has never been in an MX5 - amazing fun!!!! Actually feels very similar to the Elise, and the Caterhams - lovely direct steering, amazingly responsive throttle, lovely progressive brakes ... chalk and cheese from your average hot hatch, etc.

So, what is becoming clear is that the MX5's might be hugely reliable in the sense that they won't let you down, but it becoming clear that they are in some respects quite fragile, and require constant maintenance.

The first car was ok, but lacked air conditioning, and if I am to take it over to Europe, I decided to hang out for a air con'd car. My Elise was air con'd, and it is useful when on the motorway, or irs hot but raining, etc, etc.

The second car swerved quite heavily to the right when I accelerated, and the left when braking. The owner said its just been serviced, and aligned, and she drove it, and said she can see what its doing, but she's not used it recently, so it might be a sticky brake, or tyre pressures, etc ... but when you google the problem (and it was quite severe), its awash with similar issues. Reliable but delicate is actually how I would describe these cars so far.

So, I am going to carry on with my search for a 2 seater car, and my MX5 drives have really excited me to the prospect of having a little 2 seater.

My friend is pushing me to buy his 911, but genuinely, the MX5 is more fun, and you don't have the stress of worrying about running cost. Even give the choice of a Boxster, or MX5, I'd take an MX5 - however, I may just try an S2000 and Z4, which I don't think is the answer, as I want to track it ...

The search continues.

Try those others yes. But i do think the MX5 could be right.

Are you specifically wanting the 2.0 or 1.8? Or whichever is the best car?

How does the 2.0 for in performance terms?

Can you stretch to a GT86 or BRZ? Read my review on those - i found it great and very good fun. (although it doesn't answer the roof-off ness.

Only looking at the 2.0's only.

Do want the roof down experience.

Have driven a 350Z years ago, and yes they are generally a heavy car, and similar to a 911 in many respects - just not a delicate car.

Again, I want to do track days, and my favour is for a light track day car, and I don't think the 350z would be a good choice for that.

How to change gear in an MX5 -

In all seriousness though I'd love one. Powerful enough to have fun without worry about losing your licence, and small enough to have a great driving experience and fit in the garage!

I really want to (and will) get one.

Everyone is like ‘surely you need to buy the 911’ ..... but seriously, in terms of smiles per miles .... I reckon the MX5 is higher !!!!

Not really, given it’s got to be the 2.0, it’s got to have air con, sensible mileage, and be (able to pick up) for less than £4000.

10 year old cars, and they still fetch mental money ...

4K for a 10 year old car isn't mental money lol. You'll struggle to get a decent low milage 2 litre Focus for that budget, let alone an MX5.

Just looked at Auto Trader. Your problem is your budget doesn't fit with what you want. Simple.

There's 33 2.0 mx5s under 4k on autotrader but many of them are high on the miles. Rust is an issue on these sadly. Check out thoroughly.

It's the arse end of the market. At this price point I suspect most of the cars are going to fail to live up to expectations.

Starting to wonder if this MX5 thing is a good idea.

Came across another good one today .. called up ... 'Any advisories on the MOT?'

Oh, well, yes ... the sills are rusting from the inside ....

Seems yet again - these cars won't breakdown as such, but they are very fragile ....

A quick google search says the MK3 is more likely to rust than either the MK1 or MK2 ... shocking !!!!

Urm, still keen to get one, but definitely need to hang out for the right car, and think about other options ...

I really would get the Porsche over the MX5, so much more street cred. Not sure of the persona you want to put forward for work. But you just say oh it's just a second hand one, I always dreamed of having one etc..

LK -

On Wednesday you state that the MX5 is the right car for you. Then yesterday you don't think it is and you post a link to a Porsche (underpowered hair dryer) that's twice the cost of the MX5s?!?

Why not spend 8k on an MX5, get the toys you want. Failing that drop the 3 car strategy and get the 911! I bet you hate it when your customers are as fickle as you are in choosing a car!!!

PS I do love you.

There is no way i’d spend £8k on an MX5 even more so when I know it’ll be worth £4K in a year ....

If i’m to run 2 (3) cars, i’ve got to steer clear of depreciation (the best I can)

I’m just not sure the 911 gives me that 1 car option .... it’s just not practical enough.

I thought my ramblings might entertain this place, but if they just annoy, i’ll just update you when a new car has been bought.
