If i’m to run 2 (3) cars, i’ve got to steer clear of depreciation (the best I can)

I’m just not sure the 911 gives me that 1 car option .... it’s just not practical enough.

I thought my ramblings might entertain this place, but if they just annoy, i’ll just update you when a new car has been bought.

No no no! Your ramblings are one of the things we can rely on! Please don't stop.

What's your budget across 2/3 cars? I still think there must be individual cars that cover most of your criteria.....

The Zafira can be regarded as fixed.

I’ve got up to £20k for my car(s), but actually, if I could keep below £12k - £15k i’d probably be happier, given I don’t want a car I am overly precious about ...

So, it/they must ...

Be sensible and reliable enough for work and school runs

Be entertaining enough for road trips

It’s not an absolute - but ideally fast enough for the occasional track day (but worst case I can hire a car)

Space for 2 adults and 2 kids

A 2009/10 XFR, 70k miles - it's a no brainer. You'd still have 4-5k in the bank account for a rainy day. V8 dinosaurs will always have some value - more so when electric (or other fuels) take over. Won't be the cheapest to run, but less than Audi / BMW / Merc similarly specced cars. Tax c.£550 and insurance about £300. Tyres c £190 each (but you don't do that many miles). Main faults are non-mechanical. Same suspension parts as the rest of the XF range. Servicing about £270-320 a year. ZF gearbox is reliable enough, certainly in 6sp guise - oil change / service about £400 after 100k miles is recommended. As I said before - the perfect car for Spa (not the shop!)....

Don't use on a track (best to hire stuff for that). Brilliant car for long runs; can pick up its heals at the drop of a hat (or 1/4 inch of ankle flex!)

This is a good'un - very well looked after by a regular contributor on the XF forum. It started at £22k last November - he needs to free up cash to buy a house!

Not the biggest fan of the leather - bit of a tart's handbag!!

The facelift ones are now coming into price - I know you're no fan of the Mk1 h/lights!

Try one; fantastic engine, can make nice noises when pushed (pops and bangs), and as calm and serene as a vicars underwear drawer when not.

Cheapest way to get to 100mph in 9.5 seconds!

I must admit I saw a few face lifts coming in at about £22k ....

I’m not wavering from the MX5 idea ... just saying I need to be careful to buy a good one.

Once I’ve ticked that box, maybe something to replace the Audi with ...... although I saw a stunning Golf R the other day.

LK, why do you think an 8k MX5 would be worth 4k in a years time? You already said that they are going for silly money. I'd bet that if you bought a good one you'd lose less thsn 1k in 12 months.
My wifes Toyota Corolla Verso hasn't list 4k over the 3 years we've had it.
The problem I suspect you have, is that like me, you're looking for a great deal, a bargain. The problem with this is, as I have found, is that in most cases cars are cheap for a reason. It's either an unpopukar model, which an MX5 most certainly isn't or there is something wrong with it.
You may find the car you want at the price you want but you will have to wait and you will have to be quick. If you want my advice, and I'm sure you don't, look at how much the car you want sells for and be prepared to pay that much.

Strange - just had a wave from a friend of mine driving along. He must have recently bought an MX5 - his is the new shape. But interestingly he must have sold his BMW Z4 - a car he looked after so very well. Low miles etc etc. I guess with a Z4 you pay more for the badge - I think his was a 2.5i.

I'm with Teeps - you won't loose £4k in a year with it. Maybe £1200.

I still think if you REALLY want to get something for track use an MX5 will get boring very quickly.

An ex colleague had three track cars during the time I worked with him VX220, M3 & 911 Turbo (ok the last one wasn’t just a track car).

All mental quick and spent a fortune on modifications

You have to be prepared that the thing might (and probably will) break something major and suck up the cost.

If it were me and track use was a serious consideration I’d go for something older and bigger engined. Another ex colleague used to have an E30 325 for track use... I’d try and look at older 3 series or Z4’s

Alternatively get a kit car

Spent a lot of time in a Z4 years ago - just not that nice ... ride it brutal, and with no benefit in terms of handling ...

If i’m Upping the budget - by far the best 2 seater I have driven (other than the Elise)

S2000 !!!!

I'd say stick with the MX5. S2000s are holding their values. If the MX5 ever feels slow you can always slap a supercharger on it. Loads of people track them, I doubt you'd get bored if you only take it on a few outings. I'm a fan of BMWs but even I wouldn't have a Z4. They don't appeal on any level.

They appeal on many levels to me.

But it looks like LK isn't keen, so it's not an option.

The Z4, other than the engines, was always a disappointment for me.

The handling was fairly stodgy and under damped.

The interior quality is pretty poor (if well presented).

.. and last but not least .. I can't stomach another BMW just yet .....

WELL I HAVE BOUGHT ONE !!!! Laughing

Bought this one in the end ... negotiated a price I was happy with.

Car has been in to Mazda, and they have checked it over - no faults other than possibly tracking ..

Bring on the Sun ....

You laugh, but I am very tempted to turn this in to my project car / toy.

Lowered (tastyfully), new wheels, etc. ... all tastefully - but really make it mine.

Shit the bed!!! You've bought something......

We demand a review very soon indeed. And some pics of the interior. Perfect for you - short commute, fairly small and you can stick your head out of it. Perfect car to drive to your regular Back, Sack and Crack sessions at the beauty clinic!
