61 Plate Astra 1.6T SRi

on Sat Mar 03, 2018 6:29 pm
Test drove this today.
The good:
Nice interior, a lot better than the 60 plate Focus Titanium I drove a few weeks back. Some nice red interior lighting. Excellent seats.
Plenty of go. Feels like it has every one of the claimed 180bhp.
Refined and decent ride. Despite being the SRi and having sports suspension it road the bumps and potholes well.
Handled well.
Felt well built and solid.
Front and rear parking sensors.
IMHO a good looking car sitting on 17 inch alloys in metallic black.
The car itself was pretty mint, not showing it's age at all. 49k on the clock.

The bad:
Erm...not much really. Windy rear windows.
Steering not as feelsome as my Focus, but then not a lot has, even a Mk2 Focus.
Mrs Teeps thinks Vauxhalls are boring.

The only downside was the lack of a deal to be had on this car. Screen price was the price, the dealer said he knew he could sell it and he valued my car at £100. I can't disagree with him on that last point to be honest. It is pretty much just a shed now.

At this point I close to ringing back on Monday and buying it.

I doesn't sound like a mistake to buy it. Turbo SRi too right.

He's really not giving you much for your old car. I got double that. Razz

Even though I am a Ford man ...

I have to say that our Zafira has been brilliant .. never let us down, feels very very solid, and punches way above its weight.

Vauxhalls definitely feel 'more German' to me, and where they lose slightly in most areas for me (Looks, equipment, driving feel, etc, etc) ... I think the fact they feel so solid, and tend to lose their value slightly quicker than Ford, makes them a better second hand buy.

Nice choice! The 1.6 turbos are rare - basically a slightly detuned Corsa VXR engine (192bhp at the time).

Most of them are made in Germany, with some in Korea, Spain, Poland, England and now, France. The fit and finish of the Vectras and Astras of the time was very good - in fact, the fit and finish standards were sacrificed for style when the Insignia/newer Astra came out, although they're still put together well.

No. I was rushed off my feet all day. Work is mental at the moment. The place opens tomorrow at 8:30 am but I won't get a chance to call until after the 9am meeting. Lunch time at the latest...

No movement on price at all. Sat down in the dealers on Saturday and talked money and he isn't going to budge an inch.

If you’ve got the balls for it, you’ll get a much better deal privately

When I went to buy a second hand BMW diesel one series they wouldn't budge on the price, but were giving me 1500 for the Agila, I remember going there to buy they would only give me 1000 for the Agila and wanted 750 to put the BMW kind of on the road for me so I walked.

When I went to buy the Subaru so they gave me much less for the Agila but exactly what they promised, no extra charges for the Impreza, free road tax and full tank of gas. Maybe overall not such a good deal. But made me feel better.

I think it's the internet the sticker price gets the people in then they sucker them in to paying even more.

Glad I took the Impreza here tell you the truth a rear wheel drive only BMW would not have been my friend.

Only problem with private is my old car. It makes everuthing from picking up the new car to insurance much easier.
Subaru make very fast cars that cost a fortune to run or slow ones. I'm after something in the middle.

My big concern at the moment is that the Focus may die before I replace it.

Given what they are offering you on a part exchange, you could sell your car the next day I am sure.

I bought the Audi before selling the BMW, and it cost about £50 a month extra (a month) on insurance as road tax .... not really a big deal.

Worst case you we buy any car the Focus ....
