I haven't even got past the intro bit and it's already brilliant.

so, the actual review:

its a 1.6 petrol model, 10k on the clock, although you would be mistaken for thinking it was a 600cc....i'm not even joking. More on that in a mo.

interior: yeah, alright, nothing special, heated leather part electric seats, which were comfortable enough, plastictky dash, over complicated radio with 8 million buttons, but decent enough sound.

the dual zone climate was a bit weird.....it was cold up in the highlands, so it was mostly set around 20c with air directed to the windscreen - but for some reason, the air coming from the top vent that clears the drivers side window, blew cold no matter what?!?.

Heated steering wheel was a nice touch and actually worked quite well.

Exterior: its a crossover, it looked chunky enough, nice big alloys and lots of plastic bits to make it look funky - the colour was really nice, some shade of blue.

Drive: Neutral picked it up at the airport, jumped in, made the relevant adjustments and set off......first notable thing is the brakes.......i'm used to driving my connect and my RCZ, both of which have damned good brakes, very little travel produces a firm grip......not so on the murka, i ended up lurching forward toward the exit barrier as nothing happened for at least 2 inches - it caught me unaware.

so we get out on to the open road and i notice as you accelerate and lift off to change gear, the rev's still continue to raise another 500rpm, weird....anyway, get through the gears and hit 50mph.....go to select 6th...and....er.....no 6th.....this is a 1.6 litre vehicle.....no 6th?......so up to 60 and its almost at 3000 rpm.

worth noting at this point is there is absolutely NO gusto to this engine, it revs and revs and revs but has absolutely NO power at all, i'm guessing around 65hp - which for a 1.6 is god damned awful!.

so i get back to the hotel and reg-check the car, which confirms it is a 1.6 SE with start/stop and 115hp - no way....absolutely no way whatsoever, it couldn't pull the skin off a rice puddin'.....not only that, its rev range is just awful, its constantly in high rev's in order to make any kind of progress......i get on to the dual carriageway and hit 70 and its beyond 3000rpm.

to summarise: gutless, shit brakes, rolls around like a wobbly jelly, revs on its own, noisy and not very efficient. £46.00 of unleaded got me just 300 miles.

its the worst hire car i've ever had, utter utter garbage

I know what you mean. I drove a 2011 Astra which probably had the same engine. It was unbelievably sluggish. I think the thing was...the mapping of the throttle for emissions purposes? Totally spongy, unresponsive. Like....not just a but. ...totally. I think someone mentioned this on pistonheads too and many who'd experienced them agreed.

I've driven a Milla too but it was the 1.6 diesel which had plenty of go...but it was seriously unrefined and had a very firm crashy ride, must have been a different spec to yours.

Our Zafira has the 1.6 engine ... and it's not that bad*, the trick to it is not to rev it too high, it's reasonably torquey for a normally aspirated engine ...

Ours is 5 speed too .... which again isn't ideally ... but in the run to Eurodisney and back it tramped along at 80+mph, and was pretty economical.

Our brakes are fine too ... in fact they have a decent feel ... can jump in and out of that and the BMW, and if anything they require less push than in the BM - sounds like one abused hire car !!

Having said all of the above - you can now see why I want a car that means I have an alternative car for long journeys.

* nearly that bad, but not quite Smile

I've driven several Mokkas in my time at work. Well specced but pricey, not great to drive and the only thing worse than the 1.6 NASP petrol Vauxhall engine is the 1.4 NASP petrol Vauxhall engine.

Wouldn't have one given...

They have just released the Mokka X - same engines and specs but with different headlights and a revised interior, so might be a bit better.

Boracay Blue is a really nice colour though. Smile

Oddly enough, one of the best Vauxhalls to drive in my experience is the Meriva!!

LK, your mapping on the zafira could be different. Something is very very wrong/poor with the Astras.
I've driven many typical run of the mill 1.6 cars of that ilk and the Astra really does sound out as being extremely....weak and fluffy.
