Re: 2004 BMW 330i SE TOURER FULLY DETAILED REVIEW AND PICTURES

Lol, someones keen.
Ok.

First thing I did tonight was fill it up with LPG. 56p a litre so cost me £26 to fill the tank. Owner reckons it will get 300 miles on a tank of lpg but I suspect that depends how you drive it. Registered with DVLA as an alternative fuel vehicle so I save a whole £10 a year on tax, 295 vs 305.
So, the car...
3 litre engine pulls well from low revs but takes off above 4000 rpm when the vanos kicks in. It's not the kind of car that encourages you to thrash it on first but floor it in 2nd and it flies. It easily hits three figure speeds which I will have to be careful of. Quite a lot of pedal travel on the accellerator compared to the focus which will take some adjusting too.
6 speed gearbox is easy to use although a little notchy. 6th gear makes for low revs cruising so I imagine helps the economy a bit.
Performance on LPG isn't quite as good as petrol with less of a kick at 4k rpm but is still good and absolutely gine for 95% of driving.
Steering is not as direct as the focus and is a little bit slower, which I already knew. The focus steering really was brilliant. Nicely weighted though and plenty of feedback through the steering wheel.
On the road it is a little bit more affected by bumps and camber etc, due I suspect to the 235 tyres. However the ride quality is good and it feels very planted. Lots of grip although from memory you wouldn't want to push past the available grip on a public road. Not unless you're the stig.
Equipment wise it has climate (ice cold), cruise, rear parking sensors, tilt/slide sunroof, Isofix in the back (unlike the 2010 Focus I drove), auto wipers and leather trim. It also has an opening rear window so you can access the boot without lifting the whole tailgate. On this car that are a couple of broken bits of trim that need sorting but nothing major. The factory speakers and stereo is shite but this will be ripped out soon. Body work wise the car is very clean. It has a few scratxhes that will polish out and a handful of stone chips to sort. Crucially it has none of the rust that afflicts most 3 series of this vintage.
This is not a car that your gran could jump in and instantly feel at home in, unlike say a Ford Ka
However it feels purposeful and composed but requires firm positive inputs and doesn't feel over assisted, unlike more modern cars. This is a car that you need to drive, which I personally like. It's the reason why this is the 4th BMW I've had and the 2nd E46.

Good review.

I reckon these older Beemers probably have a lot more of the old BMW magic ...

10 out of 10 for the review.

Sounds like a great car. Sounds like your already revving the nuts off it too.

I have run it to the redline a few times. It is nice, so much more special the 2010 Focus I could have bought for twice the price.

Cannot remember where the red line is. But I've been up to just over 5000 in third trying to over take a truck with likely a BMW coming towards me..

I feel my car driving feel is like an older BMW I drove once (I think 1980's 5 series). Super purposeful. Feels robust. No bloody power....

Just found the downside to the BMW. Took the kids to swimming lessons this morning and they got mud in the back, dropped crisps on the floor and left rubbish in there. It never used to bother me in the focus...

Im fighting a losing battle with ours for that. The interior of the Picasso now resembles a total shite-fest. But it seems par for the course for Picassos so it may be acceptable.

Strangely the kids can leave any crap they like in the Qashqai and it gets cleaned occasionally

When (not if) they make any mess in the TT they're made to clean it up...

Very Happy

Got about 20mpg from my first tank of LPG...
Pretty poor really. On petrol at the moment to see how that does. It will easily beat 20 by some margin I reckon. I'm having the LPG system serviced in about 3 weeks time.

Don’t know much about LPG .... never really seemed to take off.

Is it still consider to be good, or is it a bit old technology now ?

I don't think it is the future. There are still companies out there that fit and service LPG conversions.
At 55p/ litre it's cheap to run even at 20 mpg.

In the cars defence I have spent all week testing the cars accelleration and I've done quite a lot of short, stop/start drives so it was never going to be great. My last 330i would do about 28 mpg if driven isensibly on similar kinds of roads.

Not really. It's not quite as fast but not so much that you'd notice unless your flooring the accellerator.

A couple of pictures

A few observations since owning it.
The engine really makes this car and frankly I wouldn't entertain one with a 4 pot lump. Don't get me wrong it is far from the only good thing about the car but it is by far the best bit. Effortless and smooth, it even sounds powerful when you start it up.
The 6 speed box while a bit notchy it easy to use and 6th is a proper usable gear, not just for motorways. It pulls easily from 1.5k in 6th.
Ok it's a touring but it's not that practical. The rear load space and boot opening are a lot smaller than that of the focus.
It's just really nice to drive and it never feels rough like the Focus did. I find myself wanting to just ho for a drive, which I haven't done in a long time.
