Talking Japaneser .... talking Japaneser ....

on Wed Mar 28, 2018 4:54 pm
Kinda coming to the conclusion that I really like Japanese cars.

The little MX5 is brilliant, and even our Yaris was punching way above its (low) weight.

Ok, so the downsides are typically their refinement ... the Japanese don't seem to rate refinement, be it cheaper plastics, or for me, they really seem to spend less time and money on interior refinement through sound-proofing, etc..

However - this lack of sound proofing for me has 2 side affects - 1. Weight, less of, which is always a good thing ... and 2. A better connection with the car - my MX5 for example has loads of lovely little noises, like when you change gear at a certain speed, you get the same little noises.

German cars, for all their refinement, etc, can feel a but staid for these reasons.

Loving the Mazda ... although it is back for sale (to see if I can turn a quick profit, and if not, I'll keep it) .... and would be very very interested to try a GT86 ... and wish Toyota would relaunch a slightly bigger version, like the Celica used to be.

So you're selling the MX5 despite it being so great...

I like Japanese reliability but they don't make many interesting cars. GT86 aside nothing in the current Toyota range is even vaguely exciting. Same goes for the vast majority of the range from Nissan, Mazda and Honda.
The MX5 isn't really representative of Japanese cars on the whole.

Only if I can turn it in to a quick profit.

Having spent more time with the car, I am fearful of the amount of (beginnings of) rust around the car ...... and if I can punt it back out whilst its got a good, long, and clean MOT, I will ... I fear that the next MOT might not be so clear.

If I sell, I might actually think about leasing a new Alfa 124 (the Alfa version of the MX5) ... so cheap at the moment.

What's wrong with a quick profit - will clear space for the XFR (£12750 for you!)

Those Abarth 124s are great LK. So much more presence than the normal 124. I didn't like them at first but do now. Pricey though.
What kind of lease deals have you seen?

They've been pretty good Teeps!

Something a bit different to the same-underneath MX5. Maybe less finesse handing etc but a more grunty engine. £199 and £199 sounds suspiciously cheap for a £30k car though LK?

I think the RRP is a bit daft at around the. £30k mark. You can get a nearly new one for around £22k which is much more like it.

At 98k miles, large engine, it's not even run in yet!

As for your reference to Elon Musk and the Moon - you are mistaken. It's heading towards Mars..... Get with it!

At the risk of repeating myself the GT86 is too slow to warrant the lack of practicality & cost when I looked at them

If it were GT86 money I’d consider an older TT instead

LK you’re obsessed with mileage and age of cars, they’ll always cost you money chill out

Yes but the GT86 is a really great handling car for enthusiasts, an Audi TT isn't. If straight line speed is what you want yhen a GT86 isn't for you. If you want a car that will allow you to have some oversteer fun then it is ideal.

Agreed. At even relatively normal speeds the BRZ had a lovely kinda...pivoting feeling from the drivers seat.

I'm by no means a helmsmith but I felt like I was experiencing and enjoying RWD handling.

If ever there was a lesson power isn’t everything, it’s the MX5.

Although i’d be interested to try a GT86, as you say, the fact the roof comes off then MX5 is half of the joy .... a convertible GT86 - now that would be a very interesting car

Neither a GT86 or a TT are a sports car...

Lotus, Porsche etc carry that title

Sorry Paul but you're wrong on that. In fact cars like the GT86 and MX5 are the very definition of a sports car.
