So sad to see it go - but the risk of rust underneath worried me .. and I nicked £1000 out of it .....

£1000 is a good profit!

No idea mate .. didn't keep it long enough to find out ...

Could have been fine, but there was the beginnings of a lot of corrosion on it.

The guy that bought it, bought it for his son, and restores classic cars - so he'll be just fine with it ...

I actually think the arches were ok - not sure about the sills ...

But ... the rust was .....

Brake discs and calipers.
Rear boot lid.
Wheels are all starting to show signs of corrosion.

.. and when you add in that the car badly needed a full wheel alignment - £200 .... all the tyres were starting to crack (not through age, just lack of use)... and the air con didn't work (might have been a gas - might not!!!)

I could see the costs racking up - and it was meant to be a fun toy ... not a liability.

Discs and calipers with rust on really isn't an issue. Boot lid is. Wheels again is par for the course with an older car. Wheels can be starting to show signs of corrosion on anything older than 5 years.

I think the issue is that you're used to owning new or at least a lot newer cars. Wheel alignment and tyres aside you could have probably have lived with everything else and it never caused a problem.

On the one hand ............. Wheel alignment, tyres and air con could easily be £500+ before you really start ... and then if it has got rust issues ... OR .... £1000 profit ....

Loved it - and will 100% miss it .... but £1000 is £1000 ..

Onwards and upwards.

Well, I need a convertible in my life ... and I am a massive soft top (canvass roof) fan - I think they look better generally ... but the folding hard top is a thing of beauty !!!!

Anyway - I'd like to try a GT86 - its just whether I can get the kids in (and its not a soft top).

Taking away my loathing for BMW after my 1 series ... I bet the M235i cab is an amazing all rounder ...

How did your 1 series make you loathe BMW? Loathe is a very strong word for a car that simply didn't quite live up to expections.

I do wonder what LK would think of my cars. The list of liabilities there on the MX5....it's like....nothing?!

But I suppose we are used to different budgets and stuff.

Teeps - I suspect all my hate for the 1 series was down to its engine, annoying clutch and stupid driving modes ..... on paper, it was not a bad car - 170bhp, 1.6 turbo petrol - 0-60 in 7.4 seconds ...

I wouldn’t rule out another BMW, but i’d have to be blown away by it for it to convince me to buy another.

Crix - I suspect that’s because (and I hope you don’t mind me saying) that to some extent yours are disposable .... they break, they go in the bin, and you get most of your money back for scrap ... with the Mazda ... I could easily have spent £500 - £1000 on it, and in another years time it be worth a lot less.

My Audi isn’t perfect - scraped front bumper and no air con - doesn’t bother me, because i’m Confident it’ll hold its value ....

All my car buying at the moment is focused around making the right financial choices

But did you really hate it?
The thing about any car regardless of age is that they cost money to run. Tyres and a wheel alignment aren't big expenses. I know a guy with an X6 that spends £500 a corner for tyres. 22" Run flats.
The difference is that as cars get older the running costs tend to increase and become a much bigger as a proportion of the cars value. My BMW will probably cost me more than the purchase price to run over the course of a few years, but this is just the price you pay to run a car like that.
To put it another way, the Mazda including depreciation will cost less to run over the course of a year than thr drpreciation of a new one the second it is registered. So it might feel like list money but all cars, aside from a very select few, cost you one way or another.

Oh, I fully agree ....

My mates old 911 costs a lot less to run and own than a new Ford Focus ....

Hence, i’m running an old Audi at the moment !!

Maybe not .... i’m trying my own little game of climbing the car ladder through profit alone.

Might be a few quid in that Audi at the right price ...
