2002 52 Honda Accord 1.8 Sport 5dr

on Thu May 03, 2018 4:34 pm
Well, i liked it.

It does feel quite dated...and low.

This is common now....older cars that were once classed as decent sized cars...aren't any more...and particularly in terms of height. You drive along and you are sitting well below even the smallest of new cars.

So....i kinda compared this to my Honda which was a 2007 Civic. But they can't really be compared. My Civic was much more futuristic looking (still is?) inside and out. This is much more the typical 90's/00's Japanese kinda...bland hatch style.

The interior is well enough built....but basic and lacking 'style', the only real thing of note being the aluminium gearknob which looks to me the same as the one which would have been fitted to the Type R etc? and the rather nicely shaped front seats (although they dont look anything exciting). They hold you will at both the top and bottom of your back, as well as your legs. They aren't like...recaros or anything (or maybe they are?) but they are more supportive than the typical seat.

This all helps with the driving position which seems very nicely suited to myself.

The steering wheel (i think) is leather trimmed - but - too large in size and a rather bland design.

It does have a thin rim...which i like...but the steering itself is...whats the phrase? Too twirly whirly? No, thats not it...but it's not sharp. The steering feel itself is pretty good and 'real' (as real as a PAS can be, anyway)..and the car is quite a nice thing to hustle around in. You just need to look past the initial twirly whirliness of the steering.

The 1.8 engine in the Civic was both more powerful and more economical (and therefore much cheaper on tax) than this one....but as i often say...numbers dont tell the whole story. Members may recall my general 'meh' ness with the Civic engine...and i wasn't going crazy...as this 1.8 engine proves.

This is more like your typical Honda VTEC engine...with a kinda...weakish bottom, building middle and strong top. I did notice the lack of torque when driving the Picasso straight afterwards with it's diesel torqueness - but the Accord engine is not a chore to work hard. Sounds quite good too.

The gearchange is excellent! Lovely snickety changes, helped by the lovely shaped aluminium knob.

Interior space is good front and rear and boot is very large with a huge hatch opening.

Refinement shows the cars age. This is where cars have moved on.....smoother, quieter...more insulated...more safe....but all of those things have taken away the kinda...directness of the controls and the road you can still enjoy with this car.

I liked it - and the Type R must be immense....

Interesting. I've only ever driven the Type-R but I concur on the interior. Very bland. Functional and durable but cheap plastic and not at all intetesting.

The Type-R is both epic and rubbish at the same time.

I did like those Accords at the time, I can't say I notice many around now

Kudos for managing to include "twirly wirly" in your latest car review Cool

Quick Honda Accord review from me. Checking on google it was a 1990 to 1993 shape and I drove it in 1997 maybe.

I'll always remember it for one thing, It was a few years old at the time, but I remember it felt like a brand new car. Tight as a nut. It was an auto I never knew the engine although I was sure it was a four cylinder. It really stood out for me as just a better car than everything else at the time. A bit like driving a BMW 5 series from those days, as I did once as well, just a real step up. Probably better than the BMW.

Didn't do any twirly wirly or really drive far.

Anyhoo I do remember it!

My uncle had a V-plate 2.0 SE - nice, dependable, solid car. I believe the 2.0 only had 11bhp more than the 1.8 - with no diesel model available!!

Nice to have a good shiny nob when you can see a huge hatch

Exactly! It was very satisfying grasping the knob one minute, thrashing it around, then chucking my junk in the wide open boot!

Years ago an Ex of mines dad had a Honda Accord like this.

Spent many a day in it on holidays around Ireland in it.

I really really liked it ... basic inside, but just functional, and always worked .. and when extended, when alright ... it was a car rewarded revs .. and that's a good car !!!!!

Yes. Here is the car in question. It's doing a charity run to Benidorm and we were tasked with fixing it up and fixing the AC FOC, which we have. It's in support of Northumbria Blood Bikes.

Eye er up, were gonna put our selves out for the blood bikes up North and drive to Benidorm and probably have a pint on the beach.

I'd give a mountain to climb if they came here. Razz
