Alloy wheel refurb

on Thu May 10, 2018 12:53 pm
Booked the car in for a full alloy wheel refurb - full strip, bear metal, and refurb.

Options after that are

1. Painted (realistically black, silver or grey)

2. Painted inserts, and diamond finished fronts (inserts grey, black and silver)

Diamond finish is more expensive, but they do look great .....

Any thoughts or photos to support which way I should go ....

I’ll post pictures of the wheels later, or they are on the other thread

Do the cheaper option.

Reason being it'll be kerbed and thus damaged. The cheaper option will be quicker, easier and cheaper to fix.

They only look good for ten minutes anyway....

As close to OEM as possible IMO. I can't really claim to be an authority on it but IMO wheels of a different colour to standard CAN sometimes reduce the appeal of a car. Not always though, sometimes they can look fantastic...but for a car such as this...I'd say standard, absolutely.

That looks good (maybe) but I'm not that brave (or stupid)

My top 2 choices are

1. Diamond cut, with silver inserts
2. Fully painted Anthrocite.

Not sure I'm feeling the 2 tone look.

I'm quite liking the Antracite option ....

Diamond cutting is only about £60 more, for all 4, but the Anthracite takes me back to the Lotus days .... and are a bit more meaty maybe over silver ??!!

Me neither .. in fact, not sure they work on most cars ... Quashqai wheels always spring to mind.

I don’t mind it on the Qashqai, you have enough slanting edges that it blends in

Those BM wheels don’t have the same look, not sure they would carry the look in the same way

Yeah, but what is OEM ??

I think they’ve been painted before - and looking around, the M sports seem to come with silver, grey and black options ...

Oh .... heck ...... just realised it’s actually an M330i

these are my anthracite wheels yesterday after a good clean....i'm not that keen on them if i'm honest, i think they are too small for the car (not that i want 20" rims or anything) and they just look dirty - black alloys are even worse, they look like steel hubs

this, however, I think looks 100 times better

Spot, wheels on yours look good. Those others look shit, in my opinion of course.
20s as standard are a sign of the times but cost of tyres starts to make ownership costs silly. Lad at work has 20s on his A5 and he pays £800 for a set of tyres. Still that pales in comparison to the guy with the X6 who pays almost £500 a corner.

Mine are about £200 each. I had my fronts replaced FOC in January - there is a manufacture problem with Dunlops. I had a cracked sidewall causing a major puncture; luckily not driving at the time! I took it to the Jag dealership who phoned Dunlop. I left 2 hours later with new ones.

I now keep a VERY close eye on them. The rears (285/30/20s) are not affected by the problem. About £250 each for those. If they were any wider there wouldn't be enough room for the rear axle and diff!!!

LK - can we please have another Video review?!

If you do I'll post a video of an incident I had with an '18 plate Ford Mustang the other day.

Of course my dear, man.

This one should have some lovely lovely noise to it too !!!!

I’ve decided to give this car a complete going over, so that hopefully it’s good to go for a while .... so Monday it’s having new oil, coolant and rear brake pads .... and then the alloys are getting done later that week, so I won’t have all that much time in it next week, but after that.

Can’t figure out of I paid too much for it, or not ... the nice thing about having all the work done to it is it should be pukka then .... the bad news is it’ll mean it’s cost me £13,700 (2010 / 46k Miles) .... mind, and i’ll Video it all, but the spec is scary ... there can’t have been many boxes they didn’t tick.

Black wheels always look shit in any scenario, and diamond cut wheels can be bad for corrosion and end up looking tatty.

So - Plain silver or grey for me!
