Cambelt Pricing

on Sat May 12, 2018 3:38 pm
If the TT is staying then I may as well get the cam belt replaced, its under mileage but i'ts been on a while so probably better to be safe...

From what I can see they have a hydraulic tensioner which can be changed at the same time plus water pump optionally...

Local mobile mechanic has quoted £400 all in for the cam belt & tensioner (water pump price to follow) - does that sound good / bad / about right?

The full service he's priced at £200 which I thought was high... Again, wotcha fink? I can always get ATS to service it who have been pretty good over the last few years with MOT's etc

£400 for a cambelt sounds reasonable as does £200 for a full service. What does the service entail?
Ring up an Audi speciallist and get a quote for comparison.

I’ve fallen out with my local specialist...

Found a price through a garage near MK who a lot of TT owners seem to use. It does look about right for the work I think

Still looking up the service details, on the basis it’s not been done since Spot had it then most things probably

When the thermostat needed doing he pee’d me off

Charged for a fault code reading after I’d already told him what I wanted done
Claimed the bolts at the top of the engine were rounded and seized
Wanted to do the job from underneath rather than taking out problem bolts. Price increase from £115 to £450

When I took the car over to my father in law whose a retired mechanic he did the job in 90 minutes

I’d ask him to do the cambelt etc but i know he struggles with his legs now. As much as Hed love to be hands on with cars it’s getting harder and harder for him

Timing belts should be done 70k or 10 years, whichever comes 1st.

Use Gates belts as they are epic.

Do not skimp on the water pump and insist on a metal impeller, plastic ones crack and fail.

I've never done an Audi, but 400 sounds about right if that includes parts.

But like I said, insist on Gates belts and a metal impeller water pump.

I would have as little done as possible.

Fairly sure they put some crap parts on the Agila. Noise from the engine you need a new tensioner and belt so I go it done. Year later noise from the engine... water pump... erm.. fairly sure they put a shite tensioner in it. Maybe not the correct one for the car.. Probably the old tensioner was fine they just wanted to change more stuff to get more money.

Cheers Doo

I agree Mogs, little as possible but it looks like it’s staying for a while so no cost of buying a new car & the things not really depreciating
