My driving day tomorrow .....

on Mon May 28, 2018 9:13 pm
.... is as follows.

Get in the 330i and drive it to the garage. Still getting ‘engine lean’ codes when the car is cold, and I ask too much of it. Either an air leak, or fuel pump .... it had a new fuel pump 18 months ago, so not sure if that makes it more or less likely to be the pump.

Next up, home and pick up the 911 .... drive that over to the local independent Porsche garage -  needs a major service (bonus points for cost) ....

Then, driving the Zafira down to Bodiam Castle for a few days camping with the kids ....

So, quite a few different driving experiences tomorrow. In many ways, the best of the bunch is the Zafira .... whenever I drive it, it always impresses me, and it sings the ‘smaller wheels and bigger tyres = a better ride’ song perfectly.

Hopefully the Porsche service is far more than the fix for the BMW

I wouldn't count on that...

I drove the Verso today and it goes ok for a 7 seater with a 1.8 engine. It's a very easy car to drive. The BMW isn't going to move all week, except maybr Friday. Cycling to work all week.

Oh, don’t say that !!!!

I just hope they can find the issue - I didn’t sign up for one of those ‘garage can’t find the fault’, kinda issues.

Ahhhhh the old NFF.

I remember it well, especially from my days at Ford.

I remember my Silver Focus, the car I had when I first joined Parkers forum. I would randomly lose power while driving. Ford dealer never found the fault.

I'm on half term - tomorrow I shall briefly drive the Smart, then drive the XFR into Brizzle for a possible test drive in a Pug 107.

Sadly not, LK.
I mean, they are....but they aren't.
My mam got a ka brand new in 2003...it was brill. By 2013 it was a wreck.
Lels 107 is now 10.5 years old...and in comparison it's much better.
They last better and do the numbers better (more mpg, less tax).
Ka is still king in terms of fun driving.....but for a young driver...107 is going to be a safer (literally) bet.

Shall wait to see what the 107 is like - cheap to insure at £360 for no.1 son (2 yrs) and no.2 son on a provisional. Once he has a full license this will go up to about £590. It would be about £1200 for the same in the Smart Brabus!! So it's well worth getting a 3rd car!

There's also a nice Twingo I may look at.

the 235, my girly and i went to the coast for the weekend, roof up on the way cos the weather was a bit iffy.....and stuck to 60/70 all the way. car returned 29.6mpg, which i was rather impressed with.

weather was bloody awesome on sunday where we spent the day at the beach, had the roof down on the way to weymouth. Driving around the coastline with the roof down and blazing hot sunshine was utterly awesome.....i was in my element.

Drove from weymouth to the cotswolds on the way back (to visit a wildlife park) roof down again, 60/70 again, stopped at a shop to get a cold drink and this old chap stopped next to me and said 'noice carrrr'.....we laughed about it all the way home.

love the car, its super smooth, farking quick and not having a lid just adds to the pleasure of driving.

It's a car designed for cheap insurance - not very quick at all......

But amazingly refined.

Engine lean code is telling me the temp sensor is at fault.

It tells the ECU when the coolant is cold/hot.

When the engine is cold, the coolant sensor should tell the ECU it's cold. It's clearly NOT telling it it's cold.

Change the temp sensor.

Thanks mate - been in the garage for a few days, whilst i’ve been away ... from the limited updates i’ve been trying to get out of them, i’m not sure they’ve made much progress !!!

At this moment, I regret buying this car ...

I’ve always tried to steer away from older cars, and higher miles .... and yes, it’s only 8 years old and 46k Miles, but it’s blooming complicated.- so much to go wrong, and the more I read, the more it scares me .... only had it 2 minutes, and it’s already throwing codes .... high pressure fuel pumps, injectors, Vanos stuff, etc, etc .... all stuff to go wrong !!!

Not sure how long this one will stay - and my next one will either be a lot less complicated, or leased and with a warranty.

Porsche was in the garage this week - £450 service, plus £100 if stuff, and a £1000 recommendation for air conditioning radiators (which will have to wait)

In other news, the Zafira threw a warning light for the second time in its life .... I think I know what happens - if you start the car, and stop it quickly after, and start again - 2 cold starts sends it rich, and the codes last for ages - last time we booked the car in to the garage and on the way the light went off - so we left it longer this time - it’s been on for about 3 weeks, so I booked it in the other day, to go in next week - today the light went off !!! Now that’s my sort of car !!!!

I did look at the E90 330i/325i LCI and read the same stuff as you so decided it was better to steer clear. The earlier E90 330i with the less powerful engine is supposed to be a lot more reliable.

I hope you get it sorted but you might be right about moving it on quickly. That may be why you got it for a good price.

I’m probably being overly critical at this time, as i’ve not seen or driven it for a few days ... so, at this very second I could do without it.

When you read quite how complicated these cars are it’s scary ... that’s one thing that goes in the electrics favour.

There was a Golf R in the campsite, with a roofbox too, and that might have caught my eye Laughing

LK! You got it for a good price. Pay the money to get it into shape - then you will have a great car.

Failing that get one from a trader, and lean on the SOG Act if there are problems.

No issues paying the money to get it fixed up - already spent £600 on new wheels, oil and brakes .... I just fear they won’t find the fault ... not making any rash decisions as yet.

They (even if it's not them!) will find the problem. Patience.

Is it a BMW specialist looking at it?

Re the Vauxhall. Start from cold and let it idle for 20 minutes. Boom! 💥 she'll be fine. The O2 sensors are sensitive, so if you let her warm up they will sense she's hot enough and no faults thrown.

Vanos system also sensitive. These engines actually need thrashed (as if they lived on an autobahn) so living in England where everyone is too gay to go above 71mph kills them.

Answer? Thrashing.

And use the fuel they need! If it's 97 Ron recommended, use 97. If it's less, use 96 Ron.

That's all.

His

But stay the fark away from supermarket fuel 🙄

I'm done....
