Miniature MINI review

on Fri Jun 01, 2018 5:06 pm
2014 64 1.5D

Engine quite loud and vibey when at idle or revving when stationary, but very smooth indeed when underway - and quite pokey!
Scoots along very well indeed! Gearchange very good. Steering nicely weighted with good feel buy quite arm twirlily geared.
Very nice action to stalks. Solid interior.
Car feels quite wide for a small car.
Whole car has a kinda...heavy...engineered feel to it but rides and handles really nicely. Quite a lot of tyre noise though. Seemed to be very noticeable for that. Small boot.
Didn't attempt to sit in back.
Ordinary looking seats but felt reasonable to me for standard items. Overall, very nice! 56.9 long term mpg.

I’m mini’d out, 3 of them park near us and not one of them is a Cooper Works...

I’ve not driven the diesel Crix but agree with your comments otherwise

Been in a Cooper S 1.6T and it was quick but rear leg room was awful and boot tiny. Interior was very much about style than functionality, much lime the rest of the car. I was only a passenger though so can't say much else.

Teeps, the 1.6 T was perhaps the previous model, like LK had.
The Cooper S in this version is a 2.0 T with a approx 190bhp as standard.

I've driven the Diesel version - with an auto box .. and it was pretty decent.

I agree they feel quite heavy (substantial) cars, and in my video review I said how you could convince yourself you are driving a Golf.

Absolutely. They have a deliberately heavy 'engineered' feel to them. You can tell they are in the BMW family.

However...once up and going...it was a pleasure in terms of handling, etc.

I suspect the new car doesn't differ fundamentally from the old one.

Well.....the engines are all different...and not a single body panel is shared....and I think it's on a different chassis....
But ....Yeah Wink

That doesn't mean it's funfamentally different. My point is that the criticisms of the previous model probably still apply to the new one. Fun to drive but form comes firmly before function in tetms of practicallity.

Oh Teeps.
But yes. For a not that small car...it's still poorly packaged in the rear seat and boot. You get the impression that the majority of the size of the car is taken up by th bonnet and front cabin (which is a decent size). After that....you're knackered.
But, there is a 5 door now of course with more room and a bigger boot.
