2017 67 Audi A3 E-Tron

on Mon Jun 04, 2018 6:51 pm
Just a tiddler.

Smart.

Nice inside.

It has a normal flip key....but no starter and just a button. Yes, I know lots of cars have starter buttons now...but they also usually tend to have just the fob, with no key bit (well, inside)
Anyway, the point of mentioning the key thing...it makes the car feel like it's been designed a bit...afterthoughty. The 'tacked on' starter button would also go with this. It's not a part of the dash.

Basically it tells me that the car wasn't designed with the E Tron version in mind.

BUT! I gather that the E-Tron was indeed planned from the start! So I'm talking rubbish and all of the above should be disregarded!

The A3 is a smart car inside and out. I think I prefer it now to the MK7 Golf which to me now rather...ordinary. GTI and R apart, they still cut. A.dash.

ANYWAY.

The mechanical and electrical side of things do seem to be nicely resolved. In electric only mode it's spookily quiet as is the norm. It also allows a bit more pace before the petrol engine joins in when compared to an Outlander PHEV...which you need to remain very gentle with to remain in elec only.

The cars driver (our accountant) tells me it will do approx 20-30 miles on elec with care which is the same as the PHEV.
However....I did a full bore launch in the E-Tron and it's swift! The combination of the punch of petrol noise and electric whirring when 'giving it some' is quite satisfying.
I gather the E-Tron is the same more or less as the Golf GTE. So perhaps this review is 2 for 1?

It's amazing that Toyota made such a mundane Prius and sold it all these years. I feel.

A hybrid should be a better car than a non hybrid.

Car like the E-Tron and PHEV seem like a bit of a wheeze to satisfy emission legislation. A lot of extra kit just to fo 20-30 miles on electric.

Yep - since my car has been in the garage i’ve been using a few Uber’s to get around.

Yesterday I was in a Skoda Octavia, and today in a Toyota Prius ..... heck, they are like chalk and cheese - the Octavia is a lovely lovely car to be in ... whereby the Prius was a rattly old mess !!!

I take it the octavia was new or newish and the prius was old? The descriptions could be reversed depending on age.

I was thinking that. I don't see a huge quality difference between Toyota and Skoda. A reliability one in favour of Toyota perhaps...

Seriously ?? Both of you ??

The Skoda was probably newer than the Prius - but even so - Toyota and Skoda are worlds apart in the levels of comfort and refinement ....

It always surprises me how the Prius is such a horrible unrefined place to sit.

Both of us??!!! Yes!
I must admit to not having been in a prius for a long while but I will say this:
Skoda are nice, sure but they are about perceived quality! I'm not just saying this...but when I trawl the trade ins as I frequently do, the VAG stuff doesn't last as well! Rusty outside, worn switches, broken adjusters, rattly trim! Toyota....much less of the above.
I feel that (to best compare Toyota and vag) - VAG have the soft touch plastics and posh looking switchgear down to an art.....Toyota don't. ..but they lat and wear much better!

In my opinion.

LK, I've just checked and you were talking about comfort and refinement and I was talking about build quality and reliability.
Different things I suppose.

I was in an Auris Hybrid taxi the other week - felt solid and decent enough inside. It was strange as it pulled away in silence and you could only tell the petrol engine had kicked in because you could hear it - a seamless transition as far as the ride goes. I did notice the seats were incredibly soft - as in large French car from the '90s kind of soft. Initially very comfortable but would probably lead to back ache on longer journeys.

Uber is my saviour when working abroad......majority in spain are Prius.......I agree with Loz, they are shit-boxes, the Hyundai i40 (the other uber of choice over there) is far superior in terms of refinement!
