Wishing I'd taken it to a garage. Now with pictures.

on Sun Jul 08, 2018 5:47 pm
Started replacing the brakes on the BMW after lunch today. Just getting the car onto axle stands is hard enough but it took me two hours to get ine side at the rear stripped. Handbrake shoes that work on the inside of the disc make everything more complicated and nothing wanted to come apart. Painting the calipers is a mistake as it adds hours to the job and is as messy as fark. Thankfully I don't need the car this week so it's going to occupy me for at least a couple of nights and that's just the back.
The anoying thing is I am storing some stuff for a mate in my garage so it is quite tight getting the car in. I positioned it so that I could get the door closed if I didn't finish. However in the process of jacking it, it's moved back so now the door won't close. So I'm back out again later to get it back on its wheels so I can close the door.

On reflection I wish I'd just taken it to a garage.

Work on your own car is normally a false economy ....

Not just the time, but tools, and then for everything I fix, I tend to make 2 new problems

Thankfully I have almost all the tools now. This one has thrown up some daft access issues though meaning certain tools won't fit. Feckin nuisance.

That jack needs binned! They are nasty as they twist (especially with a heavy estate car). Seriously, if you are planning home servicing, spend 80 quid and buy something heavy duty and an extra 50 quid will get you some good axle stands.

I have this (it's lasted 11 years so far) https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sealey-3290CX-Professional-3-Ton-Tonne-Hydraulic-Compact-Car-Garage-Trolley-Jack/172228704551?epid=0&hash=item2819a17927:g:tIgAAOSwnFZXUVrI

Brakes are always a bastard if they've been left a while. Don't be afraid to use heat. I have one of thesehttps://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Used-Rothenberger-Superfire-2-Blow-Torch-Soldering-Brazing-Gas-Refillable-3-5644/183311574267?hash=item2aae38a4fb:g:tsQAAOSwrTVbP9Ht

If the disc wont come off, check the handbrake is off. The use a big hammer to knock it off from behind...only if it's being changed though.

Do NOT use copper grease, it heats up & turns sticky. Use this stuff insteadhttps://www.carparts4less.co.uk/cp4l/p/-/-/-/-/?526770250&0&cc5_150&gclid=CjwKCAjw7IbaBRBqEiwA6AyZgsRZLVeQzLxFTpv3-_PWcGFEkqcqo6EJxMoK_haFkBa27M-yE2dC2hoCCC8QAvD_BwE

Any questions, please don't hesitate to ask me. I have years of experience and brakes are easy for me. 20 minutes per corner average.

The biggest issue was getting it all appart. Wheel didn't come off easily, caliper was hard to get off and disc took a fair bit of hammering. Now I've done one side the other should be a lot quicker, painting aside. Fronts will be a lot easier due to no silliness with the handbrake.

Discs are coated to stop them rusting. On the braking surface this comes off in the bedding in process. They do look good. Fecking heavy though!

Have you contacted the paint suppliers? The blue paint seems to look rather red!

Laughing

Paint must be fine mate ... only an idiot would not notice that the blue paint he ordered looked red.

Must be the forum playing up again.

It might actually be one of those visual things yeah.

Or! He might have bought Subaru 'Reddish Blue' which was blue paint but with red in it also.

But...i'd consider this....more of a Blueish Red.

Or perhaps.....just...red!

Crix, if you paid more attention you'd know that I never said I'd ordered blue.

You never said you'd ordered red either.

Blue would have been a far better choice, as i originally said.

Crix, I just checked, which you could also do. The thread is still there.
Decided that Blue on a red car might be a bit much.

I'm lucky the Jag had new discs and pads at last service - the front discs are bigger than the Pug 107 wheels!!! Must weigh a ton!

I can imagine. They're 325mm in the front and 320mm on the back. That 13" so you probably have 14s or even 15s on the Jag :-D

Crix go to the back of the class and put on the dunces hat. Read the thread ;-)
