Stick or Twist .....

on Tue Jul 10, 2018 4:12 pm
BMW 330i.

Lets say I can get £14k - £15k out of it ...

Only criteria is auto, petrol, 4 seats - no smaller than a 3 series, A5, etc.

Doesn't have to be convertible .. just interesting.

ps. I think its fixed .. I bought a new MAP sensor for it .. and all seems well so far.

Exactly! Car is fixed?!

Enjoy it for the rest of the summer, at least!

Saying that, i know th desire to change is always strong, as it is with me. I dont think i'll ever own a car that i want to keep....there are just too many fish in the sea for that.

Its more the ...

'its fixed, but my last 6 weeks spent trawling the internet trying to find solutions, has led me to 'about 100 common and expensive issues with the 330i'

Most nice cars that you would want have a list of comon problems if you read the internet. Half the problem is that, just like the news, rare events can seem common place. The other half is that because of the power of branding car makers can get away with selling cars that have known problems that could be engineered out.
Lexus is probably your only bet if you want a premium car without a string of potential wallet emptying issues.

Interesting. I made a common fault bingo form for the XF website. These account for the vast majority of fault son the internet for the XF - except for regen issues on the dervs. Most of them are a couple of hundred to sort..

There are many ways to look at a car - on one hand they are fantastic machines capable of some amazing things. On the other hand they are 2000 pieces of metal, plastic and glass careering towards failure. Just enjoy it for a bit. You have a contingency fund do you not?!!

So, the Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor replacement seems to have fixed the fault! Never occurred to me that the MAP sensor could cause all those faults...but they do fit I guess!

It must have been choked if it wasn't able to read the cold pressure... However, I am not 100% convinced as your fault seems to have disappeared at the same time as the warm (hot) weather arrived Surprised

Time will tell Wink

Yep, time will tell ... but my theory is it was under reading the amount of air going in, so that was making it run extremely lean.

However, whilst I have no fault codes, I’m only 95% happy with it still ... if I hit the gas at low revs, or try and tickle it up a hill at low revs, I get a few noises that sound like pinking.

At the same time as the new MAP, I have been running a few injector cleaners ... Seafoam mostly, so it could still be that that’s helped ... and it could still be that I have a carbon build up issue in the back ground

Thank you.

I have also recently changed one of the two vanos solenoids.

My plan is to rotate them a couple of times, to see if the movement from old to new, etc, makes any difference.

After a couple of slight 'pinks' this morning, again the car has been perfect again today (yesterday I replaced one of the solenoids with new)
