Mates Car... Oh What Fun!

on Fri Jul 27, 2018 12:08 am
Been helping a mate with his car. All 16 valves bent. Lot of work to do. Should have taken a day to rebuild, but being a useless fat broken mess, it's taken me 3.5 so far. Should get it running tomorrow though Cool

So came in and...

I'm getting there. Hopefully the trip to Lithuania will show where on my C6 vertebra is damaged and if it's repairable. Just need rid of this pain and stiff neck/back, etc. 🌵

Should have shown I didn't leave the timing belt with a slack tensioner... I tensioned it then put threadlock on it.

The local asshole claimed another victim. Claimed the belt had been done when he sold mate the car. It had been done...when the car was being built in the factory 😠

Belt snapped at 60 mph, bent every last valve!

But, the head gasket was already gone so the sump was full of oil and coolant & cooling system clogged with brown gunk.

Had my hands full, but mostly enjoyed it.

The most satisfying bit was going back after almost a week and bit by bit, taking parts out of the boot and replacing them on the engine. The wiring being "the" most fun. I really did enjoy tracing each connector and hearing the satisfying click as I popped the parts together.

The most difficult bit was trying to get the engine out of the tiny bay. It would appear that Renault plop the engine & box onto the subframe & lower the car onto that. I really struggled with finding just the right angles to allow egress. Dropping it in was a lot lot easier.

Today, it's fitting the crank pulley back on with the new stretch bolt, fitting exhaust manifold, inlet manifold & throttle body, few gearbox to engine bolts underneath, reattach gear change mech, reattach all coming hoses, fill with new oil & filter and coolant, spin her over and hope it all works 😉👍

😁

It's an 03 Clio 1.4 16v with A/C (which we a major pain up the Jackson... Had to undo the compressor without undoing any pipes. So stripping the engine became that bit more difficult.

Doing it for mates son who earth's about 50p an hour 🙄 So charging buttons. Beer tokens 🍻 really 😎 But this mate is handy to have and a favour is now owing 😉

I just hate people who stoop so low to get some cash buy lying about did like a timing belt! He could have told mate, "sorry, no idea when or if it's been done!"

Still, it's been excellent for me as I feel like I'm back 😎

The moral of the story is don't take the seller at their word. If there is no evidence it has been done, it hasn't been done.

Exactly. I couldn't do that to anyone. I can't live with guilt! I'd feel farking terrible if I sold a car and the engine blew up because it wasn't fit for purpose.

Good news, engine in & running....but!

I rather think it's a tooth out in the timing because it stalls.

However, on saying that, I fired it up and a cloud of smoke came out (all the old coolant that had leaked into the exhaust) then it misfired, coughed ran, coughed again and ran clean on all cylinders smooth revving and quiet.

I haven't connected the auxiliary drive belt so there's no charge from the alternator which might just affect the running.

Either way, it's fixable.

But I drove it away from the garage and parked it up Cool

THAT made me happy Very Happy
