Re: My Perfect Daily Driver!

My worry with an old XJR is they're at the age where big stuff reaches end of life. They're rare enough cars fot decent 2nd parts to be hard to source and some new parts will be prohibitively expensive. At least with my 330i all the bits are either common to all 3 series or used on multiple models. Same engine and box was fitted to 1 series, 5 series and Z4 for example.

As I said the XJR shares most components with the rest of the range. 4.2 V8s go on for 200k miles+ and gearboxes aren't too bad. Much easier to find the bits than my old Avantime.

2007 model looks quite reliable, in terms of still being on the road.

There's 'on the road' and there's 'on the road'

Sat on someones driveway waiting for repair, isn't technically 'on the road' Laughing

Yes but Hugh, the XJ even if you include all models was never a big seller, not like the 3 series. Parts being more plentiful than the Aventime...probably one of the poorest selling cars ever lol

Owning the Avantime taught me to research parts wisely! Think Trigger's broom!!

Someone's happy today!

A later 4.2 XJR would be better - the engine and gearbox are pretty bullet proof.

That'll be the same engine in my XK8 with the 6 speed box.

It survived a stationary lamp post while hitting said lamp post at 50mph.

Bent the bejeebus out of the prop, but the engine only suffered a broken sump, whereas the gearbox was fine.

Still going 11 years later Cool

I'd go with bullet proof Wink

Oh why must these tempting-old-prestige-barges-but-also-potential-money-pits be forever crossing my path...

I'd love to, but getting rid of the Vectra, still with 6 months' MOT left, makes no financial sense. Sad The E-class is the only car I really miss and regret selling - sitting behind that big steering wheel, looking down that long bonnet at that 3-pointed star as the car wafts along in complete comfort and refinement, everything having a beautifully weighted and engineered feeling to it - it really did feel special, and the novelty never really wore off. I was stupid to sell it. Sad I've briefly driven an E320 CDI and S320 CDI - what an engine; the noise, the torque and how it pins you back in your seat, the power that just seems relentless. Brilliant!

Sod it, I'm off home to get my cheque book...

Your E Class was the 220D wasn't it? I seem to remember you getting some crazy mpg figures from it!

Just bide your time FF. Maybe another will come along when it's the right time. it is getting more and more rare to see nice ones of them though isn't it.

E220 CDI with 6-speed manual transmission. The MPG readouts were crazy - nothing else I've owned ever came close; although I guess that could be said for the car in general.

*reminisces*

Very imprezive indeed. One does wonder slightly how accurate the computer was.....can you advise?

But yeah. Thats good going. The 3.0 wont give as good figures, im sure...but like you say, it'll sound and go a whole lot sweeter.

I think my highest displayed mpg after a long drive was 64.9 in the Auris D4D. Highest 'worked out' was 68.8 in the 107 after a long steady drive.

Highest seen (after a proper journey, not instantaneous etc) remains approx 75mpg in a works Yaris D4D back in 2001ish.

I don't think it was quite that economical in practise; using other cars as yardsticks I estimate it was getting mid-50s, which is still very good.

People do criticise Merc's manual gearboxes, but in all honesty, it was nice to use - not as crisp as some other cars, but not notchety or vague at all. Having 4 pedals could be interesting though (pedal to engage "handbrake", lever to release), especially when trying to parallel park on a gradient, lol.
