A little bit of fun?!

on Mon Aug 13, 2018 4:42 pm
Not thinking of swapping it with any of the existing cars, but I really rather like the look of these little beasts!

Saw one in London yesterday, and another on the M4 today.

Oh yes! Tremendous! Apart from the gearbox which I can not be an apologist for, it's not good. But otherwise it's really fun! Not slow! Makes a great noise, really low driving position right near the ground like in a Caterham, etc. Brill!

Not driven it for a while now but have done previously, including a trip up to Scotland with a mate, brill!

Reading up on them at the moment. There's a very good specialist about 25 miles from here (also another one about 4 miles away). They have previously worked on the one in the link. Another customer of theirs may have one for sale soon.

First I need to see if I can fit in it!

It's quite decent inside! I'm 6ft 2 and I fit fine. It's a nice place to sit. You'll probably recognise a lot of the dash and switchgear from yours.
Richards is the roadster version. I am aware that the coupe versions are maybe more sought after and a bit more expensive.
There is little boot space. The boot is very shallow. There is also a small storage area under the bonnet. However, when you store the roof bars in there, that kinda takes that up.
But that doesn't matter. Roof back, gun it. Buzzes and whooshes and chatters from the engine, right behind your head, marvellous.

Thanks for that. May pop over to Frome tomorrow to take a look. Rather a contradictory advert mentioning P/x clearance, reduced price to allow for leak, and then saying all cars come with 3 month warranty and 12 month MOT?!!? But they seem to have a good number of good reviews on Autotrader. They say it could probably do with replacement seals to sort the leak - that's £1000 to factor in, and that's before a possible starter motor!

There are reports of leaks getting into the ECU which is v expensive to replace. As with every car there are potential problems. Richards hasn't leaked, to my knowledge. However he did need to replace something on the engine which seized. I'll need to find out what it was.

It's the same gearbox as the Smart ForTwo - I have flappy paddles as well as the gear leaver shift. The crack is to anticipate the change and lift of the throttle as you change up / down. This makes the shift much much quicker. More smooth too.

I've read up on causes of the damage to the SAM unit - located below the windscreen wiper bottom drain. Poor design. There is a very good "how-to" forum called Evilution, a bit like an online Haynes guide!

Richards doesn't have the paddles. I gather you could get them as options though.

It's a big shame about the gearbox. Yes, as you say, you can modify your driving style around it BUT....it if it was a half decent 'box in the first place......

And! If it was a manual! Sweet Jesus if it had a lovely snickety manual box, it would be awesome!

The good thing though it when you aren't in the mood you can just pootle along and the car will do it's own thing...It's just...when you want to grab it by the scruff of the neck and give it a good seeing too....the engines willing, the chassis is willing, the steering (although light and twirly) is willing....and the gearbox is llllllllllliiiiiiiiiiiiiiikkkkkkkkkkkkkeeeeeeeeeeee wwwwwwwwwwiiiiiiiiilllllllllllllllllllllllliiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnngggggggggg mmmmmaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyybeeeee.

Yes, it's not a disaster...but it's not good enough!

My sisters for four has THE slowest change ever an all. But if you do it manually, that a different story. I prefer manual changes as you can thrash the be jeebus out of it and it is so willing right up through the revs and a magic sound off it too, neeeeeeeeeeeyaaaaoowww Laughing

mr brother had the finale edition, it was great fun.....but as others have said, the gear-change was awful....if they did manual version, it would be a lot of fun!

Looking at this one on Thursday - looks likely. It's being sold by the chap who runs the Roadster Forum - engine has just had new timing chain and mechanical overhaul. More importantly it has the three spoke alloys, and not many cars (other than Saab 900s) can carry them off...
