Progress is progress ... if expensive

on Wed Aug 22, 2018 4:46 pm
So, finally got to the bottom of my cars issues, although this is where is gets tricky ..

Took it to a specialist, who fault checked it, and said 'fuel pump' also.

I always felt it was a vacuum leak, so the plan was to then smoke test it .. but 'fuel pump plausibility' found,, and that never happened.

Took it to BMW (actually drove it down there, and left it with them) - fuel pump knackered (and under warranty) - new one please.

BMW call me back .. its not the fuel pump ONLY ... its a cracked cam cover causing a vacuum leak ...

OK - new pump please, and I'll tackle the cam cover ..

Oh, sorry, Sir, we won't replace the fuel pump until you fix the cover, so we can test it properly.

Ring up specialist, that's BS - get them to replace the pump, its at fault, and then bring it to me for the cam cover (half the price) if it needs doing, but a small crack won't give you any / many issues if the pump is working correctly.

Stalemate .. currently waiting for BMW head office to give me their response.

Its progress - but heck its painful.

Meant to be driving the car to the Isle of Wight next week - was hoping it'd be in full health - not sure at this point !!!

Can you get the specialist to invoice you for the Cam cover, but not actually do it. Get BMW to sort the pump, and then re-test at the specialist? Then if it needs doing, pay the specialist invoice and get it done?!

Good idea, but no ... because the cam cover 99% sure needs doing as its throwing lean codes ...

The easy (although not so easy) option is to collect it - get the cover done, and take it back .. but that's more faff, and cutting it very fine for the pump warranty !!!

Might have to be this way though ...

Have they been able to point you to a particular clause that says we will only replace a part under warranty if no other faults are found at that time? If there’s nothing similar in writing I can’t see how they intend to win the argument

I’d understand if they sent you off with a receipt / completion cert stating could not fully test & customer accepts the risk

I understand what you're saying LK, but surely if BMW have themselves (well the dealer) said that the fuel pump might be faulty, within the warranty period, then surely that's enough. Even if they get the car to remedy later.

Sounds like a good reason to get rid of it to me!

Wouldn't have these issues with a 911!!

*plants the seed*

Very Happy

I am in the 911 at the moment (not literally) and I’ve gone through the same sequence ...

Dislike when I first get back in it, in to love !!!

Could do - it’s only a £5k upgrade from the BM - but it’s just so impractical.

Anyway - Vauxhall - none of this BMW nonsense ... car is in garage with warning light - needs a new o2 sensor ... all covered under warranty, no arguing - how amazing is that !!! 5 years old, 24k Miles - no messing !!!
