I’m in the club!

on Tue Nov 27, 2018 12:45 am

Bought in February with 174,000 miles for £350... 9 months and 26,000 miles later and she still drives nicer than a lot of more modern cars, is solid with no squeaks or rattles, runs like a clock - nice and smooth, still with the vast majority of things working fine. If anything, it’s embarrased my previous cars by highlighting how well they didn’t last, lol. Decent, simple, proven, solid German/General Motors engineering and build. It does make me sad that GM have left Europe as they genuinely had some decent products. Oh well, here’s to the next 200,000! Smile

Shouldn’t you have been doing 100mph to celebrate?

Qashqai is currently 79,000 miles behind you! At the usual annual mileage it will take 8yrs to get to 200,000

What sort of car are you running. A Vauxhall Opel Senator?

I'm coming up to 25k miles soon. I too don't seem to drive that much. The Agila was so cheap and cheerful in comparison. Agreed we lost a lot when GM pulled out of Europe.

It's a 2003 Vectra with the 2.2DTI lump - only 125bhp, so not much by today's standards, but gets 50mpg all the time and doesn't have a highly boosted turbo with mega high pressure injectors to worry about. We took in a Volvo XC90 at work last week as a P/X - it has a 2.0 turbodiesel engine that puts out 224bhp - that's only 1bhp less than my 3.0TDI A6 used to put out. I think Jaguar also do a 2.0/2.2 turbodiesel that develops 240bhp? Granted, technology moves on, but that seems like a lot of power/torque for an engine of that size to produce, especially when it's being put through these modern 7-/8-/9-speed DSG-style gearboxes that seem so popular these days - often getting floored from traffic lights!! It does make you wonder how long all these delicate, complex components will last.

At my current annual mileage, in 8 years time, the Vectra will have... 480,000 miles on it. Laughing

Live in Pontefract, parents/friends in Leeds, the Mrs in Bingley and work in York... it all adds up pretty quickly. The £60 in diesel every 5 days hurts a bit! A good, comfy car for mile-munching, though. Smile

Thats mental mileage FF! But its great news about the car. I've never been in that club with any of my cars.

Is it the Elite model FF? So leather, heated? cruise etc?

I think the highest mileage car i've had was my old Mondeo which had 164k miles when i got it....and 168k when the cambelt went bang.

Second highest will probably be the 9-5 which had, i think, 155kish. It must have just gone up and down the motorways that thing, the interior apart from the drivers sear was absolutely immaculate. Bloody good car that. Bloody hell man.

The highest annual mileage i ever did was appprox 25k. That was when i had the Fiesta and i just used to drive EVERYWHERE in that, often for no reason. Those days are long gone! Every journey now has to have a reason!

It is indeed the Elite - enough toys to play with, but not too many to go wrong. Smile
